Product Details

This is an injection-plastic jet aircraft model kit.

The F-4F adopted by the West German Air Force was a simplified variant compared to the U.S. Air Force's F-4E, a design choice driven primarily by budgetary constraints.

The aircraft's primary air-to-air armament -- the AIM-7 missile -- was abandoned, and its AN/APQ-120 fire control system was downgraded. Furthermore, the acquisition of newer models in the AIM-9 series was forgone, limiting the aircraft exclusively to the use of the AIM-9B. Due to its analog radar sighting system, the aircraft was unable to process digital imagery signals from electro-optical weapons; consequently, it was incapable of employing the AGM-65 Maverick -- a cutting-edge air-to-ground missile at the time.

The F-4F was not equipped with all-weather capabilities; instead, it was designated by NATO as a Clear Weather Interceptor (CWI), with its primary mission defined as providing close air support for ground forces.

West Germany procured a total of 175 F-4Fs, which were subsequently assigned to fighter wings JG71 and JG74, as well as fighter-bomber wings JB35 and JB36. This model kit from Fine Molds features decals for markings of two aircraft from JG74, as well as markings for an aircraft belonging to the 20th Tactical Fighter Training Squadron (20 TFTS) -- a U.S. Air Force unit dedicated to training German Air Force pilots. In particular, JG74 was named by Gunther Rall, a decorated World War II ace pilot who had risen to the rank of Lieutenant General in the West German Air Force, in honor of Werner Molders, a legendary ace credited with 115 aerial victories.
