The Chidori-class torpedo boats were developed for the Japanese Navy, whose possession of auxiliary vessels such as cruisers and destroyers was restricted by the London Treaty of 1930, as a small vessel with a standard displacement of less than 600 tons, outside the restrictions, and equipped with heavy armament comparable to that of a destroyer. The first vessel, Chidori, was completed in November 1933 (Showa 8).
However, the small vessel's heavy armament caused a lack of stability, and in March 1934 (Showa 9), the third vessel, Tomozuru, capsized in rough weather (Tomozuru Incident). In response to this accident, many vessels of the time, including this type, were subjected to improvement work to restore their stability.
After the outbreak of the Pacific War, it participated in the southern front, and then served as a convoy escort, but was sunk off the coast of Omaezaki in December 1944 (Showa 19) by a torpedo attack from the U.S. Navy Balao-class submarine Tilefish.
