The M4 medium tank was a 30-ton tank developed and manufactured in the United States during World War II, boasting high mobility and firepower. The M4A1, a type with a cast, one-piece upper hull, began mass production in February 1942. Equipped with the same air-cooled radial engine as the M4, the M4A1 had less interior space than the M4's welded steel hull, but its rounded hull shape provided better bullet protection. The M4A1(76w), a later-model hull with a wet magazine and a T23 turret equipped with a 76mm gun, entered combat in July 1944.
The M51, operated by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), was a vehicle equipped with a later-model M4A1 cast hull and a turret equipped with a shortened-barrel CN-105-F1 105mm .56-caliber gun. The first mass-produced model equipped wqith a gasoline engine was called the Degem Alef (Ausf.A).
