After Germany's defeat in World War I, which banned tank development, the first mass-produced operational tank developed by Germany was the Panzer I.

Following the A model that began production in 1934, the improved B model was introduced in 1936.

The engine was upgraded from 57 horsepower in the A model to 100 horsepower, and the welded body structure was extended by about 40 cm.

It was armed with two MG13 machine guns.

Originally developed as a training tank, the Panzer I was deployed in combat during the Spanish Civil War in 1936, followed by the Polish invasion in September 1939, the French campaign in 1940, the Balkan invasion in 1941, and the early stages of the Eastern Front.
